James Irvine (1958 - 2013) studied at the Royal College of Art. In 1984 he established his own design studio in Milan. In 1988, he lived in Tokyo and worked in Toshiba’s design department. He was a member of the Olivetti Design Studio until 1993, and a partner of Sottsass Associati until 1997. The new Mercedes Benz “city bus” fleet for Hanover was created in 1999. In the interior design and furnishing sector, Cappellini was his first client; today, internationally operating companies such as Arper, B&B Italia, Magis, Muji and Zumtobel are on the list of clients. James Irvine designed numerous products for Thonet ( A 660, A 1660, S 5000, S 123, S 1123) and advised the company from 2007-2011 in the position of art director.
